Paranormal Romance Author - Tressa Mesenger
Please join me in welcoming author Tressa Messenger. The interview is now working. (Don't you just love technical difficulties? :-P )
Tressa writes Paranormal, Romance and Mystery/Thrillers.
Ann: Hello Tressa. I am excited to have this chance to talk with you. I have heard great things about your books from Goodreads and on Facebook. When did you realize that you were meant to be a writer?
Tressa Messenger: I have always liked to write. I grew up writing poetry. I was always a good note writer because I could express how I felt so much better. I was so imaginative that I would come up with these dramatic scenes and would literally start crying. It’s embarrassing now that I’m older and I really hope no one saw me.
Ann: You just recently released Protect Us, the third in a series about Anna-Marie and the oh-so-hot Alessandro. Congratulations!! Did you ever picture yourself as such a successful writer?
Tressa Messenger: NEVER! This has been so insane. I always dreamed about being a columnist for a magazine or newspaper where I could write about anything I wanted. I never thought writing books would be my future.
Ann: How and when did you get started in writing and what was your prompt to publish?
Tressa Messenger: I started a book when I was 20. It was a way to get out some intense emotions that I was feeling. But honestly, hated to read at that time. I never read for myself. I learned when I was 30, while writing Protector, that I am dyslexic. It explains a lot. When I was 22 I read my 1st book for myself and was instantly hooked. I proceeded to try to write another book when I was 23 but that didn’t take either. Like I said, I wrote Protector when I was 30. I had no clue what to write about, I just started writing, and it because this amazing story. It has gotten so much easier since then. I told myself in the beginning that if I sold 1 book and someone liked it, I have succeeded. Of course the notoriety gets addictive, now I want more!
Ann: Cover art is such an important element in drawing readers in, despite the cliché "don't judge a book by its cover." What do you focus on when you are considering your cover and how do you find your models?
Tressa Messenger: I think the cover needs to embody the body. I can write a whole story based around a picture and title. I strive to make them all tell their own story. The model for the 1st two in the Protector series is actually me lol the 3rd is my niece. I imagined her when writing the character.
Ann: I know you have been on the hunt for a male model/representative for your Italian stud Alessandro and asking for feedback to pictures on Facebook. What are your plans for the near future?
Tressa Messenger: Gosh, I really don’t know. I have a friend who has a movie studio and I have spoke to him about putting together an indie film, so we’ll see.
Ann: Okay, a question I'm dieing to ask is: How do you find your inspiration?!?!
Tressa Messenger: I pull inspiration from my own life and I write what I like to read. Every single one of my books has personal stuff in them. My latest one I recently finished, This I Promise You, is very personal and caused a lot of tears while writing it.
Ann: Since your latest book is in the Paranormal Romance genre. What about your Mystery/Thriller? Do you have anything in the works to follow up Too Close To Home?
Tressa Messenger: Yes, I left it open for a sequel. I always seem to fall in love with my characters and have a hard time letting them go. I have the idea for it, I’m just putting some time in between them.
Ann: Where is it that people can find and buy your literary creations?
Tressa Messenger: They can be found on any kind of e-book website and for hard copies, www.createspace.com. Just type my name into your book search engine and you’ll find me.
Ann: I definitely feel that you are an author to keep track of. Where can all those who agree with me follow you?
Tressa Messenger: I have 2 face book pages. I’m not sure why. I started 1 and someone told me I needed a fan page. I can be found at www.facebook.com/tressamessenger and twitter: @tressamessenger
Ann: Before we go, would you be willing to give us a teaser/summery of Protect Us?
Tressa Messenger: Anna-Marie and Alessandro work hard to provide a stable life for their only child, Gemma. The child that was bestowed to them by their goddess Ameretat for reasons still unknown. Like Alessandro’s mother did to him, Anna-Marie works diligently to protect her special daughter and lead her away from following in her father’s footsteps in becoming a Protector. Weeks before Gemma’s eighteenth birthday Gemma has a magical night with a boy, Ford Chase, who just may have been “the one”. They laughed and danced and kissed under the moon light. That is before he was forcefully taken away from her by a Rogue. Gemma desperately chases after them, but to no avail. Heartbroken and angry Gemma vows right then and there, despite her parents pleading, she will join the Protector order on her eighteenth birthday and avenge Ford’s death. No one could foresee the events that would ensue thereafter and little by little the gifts that Ameretat blessed Gemma with become apparent and are far more than anyone could ever imagine.
Ann: Thank you so much for being here! I can't wait to read your books and see what you come up with next.
Creative Writing in the Practical World
Watching a three year old dance around and jump and trying to sing a song and you can see it. Seeing a four year old tackle their aunt and become a tickle-monster and you can see it. Creativity can help in our everyday life. The joy, energy, amazement, and wonderful excitement that a box and a pile of dirt can provide is endless. Why does it have to end with adulthood?
Children learn through play. Work and exercise are important, but so is relaxation. In order to perform at our peak levels our minds have to be as well rested as our bodies, if not more so. With all the stresses in our lives we need to have a healthy outlet. Creative writing provides this outlet.
What is it about the play that helps children learn? The biggest part of it is that they are having FUN. They enjoy the little things in life; they see the wonder in the simplest of things. We as adults can learn from them. We all know that we put more effort into things we enjoy. Work doesn't have to be boring work. If we can open our minds back up to the wonders of the world around us, our stress levels will go down, our brains will create more endorphins and we will be happier and healthier... and so will those around us.
Through creative writing, we are able to recapture some of that awe. Our minds are able to explore the senses, to escape from reality, to explore countless worlds, and to discover the un-discoverable. And in the process we also organize our thoughts. We must create a structure for our imaginations to grow. Our minds are like abandoned gardens needing tending. The trellis must be cleared off, the roses pruned, the path cleared. Our gardens are our own. There are so many plants, stones, and other decorations that you can sculpt your garden to the style you like. While some are large, elaborate, and well groomed, others are more natural and simple. That doesn't mean that they are any more or less beautiful. They are just what they are.
There are many adults who haven't tended their gardens in years. Many may have even forgotten how. Those of us who still have a garden, whether large or small, have the responsibility and the joy to share that with others. I am not very good with literal gardens. I don't have a green thumb, I have a gangrene thumb. However, I do have a bit of talent with writing. Not as much as many, but more than others. I can only hope that what I have others can enjoy. That is the larger reward... the joy on another person's face when they have accomplished something, when they have found escape in what I have written or what I have helped them to write.
Many people focus on practical writing, but I say that creative writing is practical. A tool that encourages and enables an individual to grow as an person and improve their literacy is... priceless.

Making Creating Friends and Influencing New Characters
Building your characters is one of the most important things in fiction writing. You have to have believable characters that people can connect with on some level. The fun thing is that there are so many levels that people can connect on.
There is that adorable, cutesie character that everyone loves; the annoyingly perfect girl that you love to hate; the comic relief of the group; the bad boy; the list can go on and on. The interesting thing is that you can mix these roles up into an infinite combination because everyone is different.
You also have the good vs. evil card to play. This too can be manipulated. Think about how many books, movies, TV shows you have read/seen where you root for the "bad guy." It happens quite often. There are many "bad guys" that you feel sorry for, and there are the ones that you hate forever.
This is where the Rambling Voices in My Head kick in. When I create a character, I decide upon who they "remind" me of. Usually it only takes one scene to start this off. I pick one or two specific qualities and base my characters on that for uniformity. There are times when I am in a silly mood, times when I'm in a cranky mood, serious, etc. By picking two dominate traits and adding a specific quirk, the new character has been born.
Just as in real life, the characters grow and develop... and this is a good thing. While you want consistency, it is fine for your character to occasionally do something "out of character." Everyone has moments. By connecting with how you would feel in a given situation, or a combination of people you have come across in your life, you can make your characters come to life. Everyone has had to deal with some sort of loss in their lives. We all have times when we are happy, sad, angry, frustrated.
By finding the emotional connection in body language and in all of the five senses you can show these personalities in your writing. It took me a long time to understand what it means to "show instead of tell."
Ex: The little girl jumped and squealed as she bolted for the ramp at the crowded playground. She stretched as far as her arms could reach, tottering on the edge of the decking for the painted metal bar. With all of the chatter and laughter of the children around her, she couldn't hear her nanny calling to her. Fearlessly, she swung along the bars to the other side, not knowing how close she had come to landing face first into the cedar chips that surrounded the structure.
I'm sure that just about everyone has seen a fearless, carefree child on the playground at some point in our lives. Perhaps that person was you or maybe it was who you wanted to be.
The next thing is to make your characters connect with each other. This doesn't have to be as scarey as some people think. Or maybe scarey is what you are after. Either way just keep the character's qualities in mind. You can have characters that blend together with similar or complimentary qualities or clash with their similarities or differences.
Draw on your own experiences for stronger emotions and remember that the sense of smell is the sense that has the strongest connection with recall. For instance, think about a skunk; think about the trash that sat out in the sun; think about an early autumn bonfire; think about Thanksgiving dinner with turkey, and pumpkin pie. I'm sure most of you could actually recall the smells as you read it. (that's why I ended with a pleasant smell.)
By drawing on emotions and the senses you can create friends and new characters. And by doing this, I hope that I can make friends with at least some of my readers. =)

Truly One in A Million
How many of us look at our children and love their uniqueness, despite how difficult they inevitably can be? I'm sure you all do. I know that I look at my kids and grandkids and do my best every day to give them every opportunity to reach their potential. We worry about their education and their health. But what do you do when their health limits their potential.
I'm sure not many, if any, of you have ever heard of Pro-opiomelanocortin deficiency disorder - abbreviated as POMC. How could you when there is only one verified case in the United States. That case is a little boy, Nathaniel - affectionately called Nater. He turned four years old in August 2012 and lives in Florida with his mom.
His mother had a normal pregnancy and delivered an apparently healthy baby boy. As a typical mom, she saw her baby as the perfect, loveable child he was... and still is. Developmentally, differences were noticed early. Sitting up and crawling were delayed. It took until May 2010 to discover why this happy little boy still couldn't walk, why he still couldn't do many things we take for granted when looking at our own beloved two year old's.
Dr. Val Sheffield, a geneticist in Des Moines, IA at the Children's Hospital diagnosed Nater through a simple blood test. Unfortunately, due to the rarity of this disorder, it's not easy to learn more. In fact, Nathaniel's mom has only had semi-direct knowledge of four other cases; a girl that lives in Mexico; two boys in Germany (ages 16 & 18) and one case study of an adult male in Italy. There are under fifty cases total in the world
POMC is a genetic disorder. Nathaniel is actually missing half a gene R236G. (2P23.3 ) Other missing gene disorders more commonly recognized are Downs Syndrome and Prader Willis. Prader Willis is closer to POMC in characteristics since they both exhibit hyperphagia. This means that they are always hungry... Always! Since it is genetic, there is no cure for it. The symptoms are treated and a lot of attention, dedication, and love are needed to allow Nater to live his life.
Because of the POMC, Nater has many other problems including: Adrenal Insufficiency (AI), which means he has to take steroids for the rest of his life. If he is sick, his dose is doubled, if he has a fever it is tripled, and if he vomits or passes out he needs an injection. Another issue is hypothyroidism, meaning his thyroid doesn't work. The problem here is that he is allergic to the thyroid medicine, causing dehydration and upset stomach... resulting in vomiting and a needed injection of steroids.
A third major problem is called hypothalamic. The 'thalmus' regulates body temperature. His doesn't work, so he can't tolerate either temperature extreme. Summer months are difficult for him, making his beloved trips to the beach only possible from October through May due to the heat - even with the two specialized vests, donated to him, that help cool him.
One more major issue this four year old lives with is anterior & posterior pituitary disorder. The pituitary gland is in the brain and controls the endocrine gland. An MRI showed that his pituitary is small and abnormally shaped. This essentially means that if his pituitary gland was normal, he wouldn't have any of the problems listed above.
Some of, what his mom considers “bonus” issues include PDD/NOS - a processing disorder that some say fall in the autism spectrum; OCD - obsessive compulsive disorder; hypertonia - weak muscle tone; OSA - severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea; developmental delays; and if that weren't enough, he's farsighted and hates his glasses.
With the support of Dr. Miller, a pediatric endocrinologist at the University of Florida, Nater's mom has to severely limit his diet - restricting him to approximately 600 calories a day. That's total; split into three meals a day. Given his OCD and his limited diet, mealtimes are a challenge. He has the same foods nearly every day. The only variety he permits is one of three choices at dinner time. If not controlled, Nater would literally eat himself to death. He would eat until becoming sick, then eat more. Without the careful supervision of his mom and day care workers, he could easily rupture his stomach. This little boy eats so quickly that his mom can't eat with him - he would want her food as well. Even the refrigerator is locked for his protection.
Despite all these hurdles, Nater is a happy-go-lucky child. He sees the joy and excitement in the simplest discoveries. While his mom runs him back and forth to doctors and therapists, counts his calories, watches his temperature and mood for any signs of illness, and struggles to get through the day; Nathaniel thrills in the simple pleasure of watching Thomas the Steam Train over and over and over.
Awake by 6:00am and downs his breakfast and medicines in no more than ten minutes before going to play. At 8:45am they start the 45 minute process of leaving the house to go to "school", where he stays from 10:00am - 3:00pm. Without fail, on the way home from day care, he will scream and cry to go pet the dogs at the local shelter he visited once. Dinner is promptly and precisely provided at 5:00pm after which he will play with his Thomas toys, watch a Thomas movie, and get a bath. With the help of Melatonin - a natural sleep aid, he falls asleep some time between 6:00-6:30pm. You might think this would be the end of a long day, but things aren't so simple. He routinely wakes up every three hours, gets a drink of water, and goes back to sleep. And that's on a good day.
Nathaniel has two AFOs (Ankle Foot Orthopedics), his two types of cooling vests, a wheelchair, and a nebulizer. He will be going in for a second sleep study soon, and needs a C-pap machine, but he no longer needs his walker - having walked into the doctor's office, for the first time ever, just months ago. He goes to OT (occupational therapy), aquatic PT (physical therapy in a pool), and speech therapy.
Having made several wonderful advancements, he is now about two years behind in mental development and is working on jumping with both feet off the ground. Some of his long term goals are to ride a bike/tricycle, and get his own service animal. He is currently on a list to receive his service dog and will get to spend a year of specialized training to work with his new helper.
As far as the bike/tricycle goes... Well, that brings up another issue. With the specific disabilities of this wonderful four year old boy, his mom can't simply go to Wal-Mart to purchase items for him. They simply don't fit. They are not built to hold a child his size. After applying for and receiving a grant, Nater was able to get a custom made stroller that would be sold for over $900. It allows him to enjoy the beach that he loves so much. Wheelchairs, after all, don't work well on sand.
What does his future hold for this "island among an ocean of friends?" The future only knows. A group at the National Institute of Health in MD are eager to include Nater in a study that will be published upon completion. They also hope to make it to the 3rd International Hyperphalagia Conference next year, if there is one. That is as much planning as can be made.
While it is difficult for the majority of us to imagine our babies, or grandbabies, growing up into independent, responsible adults; this is something Nater's mom can't do. Life comes one day at a time on POMC Island, the metaphorical island that is this sweet boy's life. While others may look on and see everything trying to hold him back, Nater simply floats happily along and shares his happiness with everyone he meets. When asked what she would want to say to the world if possible, Nathaniel's mom paused. Even over the phone it was easy to hear the pain in her voice when she finally answered,
"Don't judge," she managed to say. "He is probably happier than most people."
Nater's mom excitedly reported that he’s starting to develop an imagination and he recently lost four pounds. This may not sound like much to most of you, but it is the first time in his life it has happened. They didn’t even know if the possibility existed. Nater’s mom also told me how much it hurts to see or even hear about other, "normal" kids. We want so much for our children that we usually don't think of how much they already have. His mom also told me that over the last four years, since his birth, he has been teaching her - teaching her to value every precious minute, every small discover, every hurdle crossed, every day shared.
So, in this holiday season, when you are thinking about which video games or books your child or grandchild is now interested in, or even that play that your loved ones are in... For some people in the world, just being able to spend the day outside, going a day without having to rush to the hospital, or watching your four-year-old discover the pretty butterfly in his book and be completely amazed... that is what makes it truly one in a million. Nathaniel is truly one in a million. You can follow this wonderful boy's progress, learn more about conditions like his, and even help him achieve his goals through the sites listed below. Please help me share his story and the awareness of such rare disorders.

Blogger Award
The wonderful Jodie Pierce has seen fit to include me with the honor of the Very Inspiring Blogger Award AND Blog of the Year Award!!!! Thank you so much Jodie!!! While I am greatly honored by this, I am humbled to think of how many others deserve this award.
I have jumped head first into the world of blogging and publishing. There are several people that have helped me along the way, and several who have inspired me. First is my husband. He has been there for me when I wasn't there for myself. Without him, I wouldn't be even close to where I am today or will be tomorrow. However, he doesn't blog. So, I can't send this to him.
There are a few connections that I have made that I could say stand out to me. They have been an inspiration to me and wonderful sources of encouragement and patience with my stumbling feet as I learn this new world I have joined.

Interview with Author Deborah Palumbo!!
Today is my first interview on my very own blog! I hope you enjoy it because we are having a great time.
Ann: Hi Deborah! Thank you so much for visiting my blog.
Deborah Palumbo: Thanks for having me today Ann and congratulations on your new blog! I'm really glad to be here; I love chewing the fat and getting to know people. I'm always hopeful to find a new fan and friend. So, what can I start off saying?
Well, I am a self-published author with 9 books available in eBook and paperback exclusively on Amazon. I write Paranormal, Mystery and Historical novels. People often ask me how I'm able to write in different genres and I say, "Life isn't just one genre."
I also wrote a screenplay with acclaimed actor/writer Jordan Rhodes which is my claim to fame. LOL. I loved the experience of screen writing especially with Jordan, but my true and first love is writing novels.
Ann: Thank you. I read your interview with Jordan Rhodes on your blog and LOVED it. I hope I can do as well. How long have you been a professional writer, and how did you get started in your professional writing career?
Deborah Palumbo: I've wanted to write novels ever since I was a little girl; it's just something innate. I started out at age 7 through 18 writing poetry for God. It wasn't until I was stricken with a debilitating illness that I began writing novels, and that was around 1990. In 2010 I dusted off those files and decided to self-publish in 2012. Anyway, it was a long journey to get here but I sure am glad I'm back writing novels.
Ann: Is there any specific inspiration in your life that you use to affect your writing? How do you get started on a new project?
Deborah Palumbo: An idea just literally "pops" into my head; it could be something as simple as one word that produces an entire novel for me!
Ann: Tell us about your newest project(s). Do you have any specific goals for your writing?
Deborah: Well, I just published my newest paranormal novel The Banished One which is book 3 in The Undeparted series. Now I am onto book 2 in my crime noir series, The Detective McAllister series.
Ann: Do you listen to music as you write? If yes, what type; if no, is there a reason?
Deborah Palumbo: No, I need to have it quiet and be alone with my thoughts and ideas and the with the voices of the characters.
Ann: Is there anything else you'd like readers to know about you?
Deborah Palumbo: Actually I'd like to let everyone know I started a new blog called MERGE, just the best damn blogs on the planet. It's a place for authors and bloggers to advertise their blogs for free, gain new followers and fans, make new friends, discuss their books and reviews.
Ann: That sounds great! Where can I go to join up?
Deborah Palumbo: http://deborahpalumbomergeurblog.blogspot.com/ I'd love to see you there, Ann!
Ann: I'm there! Now how about telling us about your latest novel in The Undeparted series?
Deborah Palumbo: Before I tell everyone about The Banished One, I'd like to first tell everyone about the main characters in The Undeparted series: QUENTIN, the father of all vampires who is in an emotional transition, the beautiful and once mortal CASSANDRA, Quentin's sidekick since the 1200's, the sexy and mean spirited CHRISTIAN, and the vicious and evil and always lustful, LUCIUS.
Now onto The Banished One. Love, murder, sex and VAMPIRES. (For 18+)
A sleepy little town has a secret: there's a serial killer vampire on the loose.
Lucius, is still wreaking havoc on the sleepy town in Tower City, and since he's supernatural he can't be captured by normal police procedure.
A frustrated Lieutenant Welby refuses to believe that the one responsible for those dead bodies in his town, is a vampire; that defies logic. There's got to be another explanation for those fang marks in the victims' throats.
Welby remains a staunch disbeliever in vampires until a series of preternatural events and the coroner's scientific evidence causes him to change his mind. Welby then follows the old town rumors right to Quentin, the father of all vampires and his gothic castle to enlist Quentin's supernatural aid in capturing Lucius.
Will Quentin, the only one who can stop Lucius' vampire tirades, help the Lieutenant or make him one of The Undeparted?
Will Quentin battle Lucius and send Lucius to the bowels of hell for eternity, finally ensuring that Cassandra is safe from her old beau? Will the old coal mining town be safe at last?
I hope everyone enjoyed themselves as much as I did and falls in love with the series! Thanks everyone for letting me chew your ear off for a few minutes! And please remember I write Mystery novels too, you know, with frustrated detectives who are hot on the trail of some killer, and I write historical romance 'cause everyone loves romance!
Ann: Wow! I'm glad I'm over 18! =D
Deborah Palumbo:Thanks one and all and thank you Ann, for this opportunity!
Ann: It was my pleasure. I hope to have you back again some time not to distant future. In the meantime, all those interesting people that are reading this can learn more about you and your books at the following links.
